Anelka back in London after World Cup expulsion

Mon, Jun 21st, 2010 2:38 pm BdST
London, June 21 (bdnews24.com/AFP) – France's star striker Nicolas Anelka arrived back in London Monday, an AFP photographer said, after being sent home from the World Cup following a foul-mouthed rant at coach Raymond Domenech.

Anelka, who plays for English Premier League champions Chelsea, arrived back at London's Heathrow airport after flying back from the tournament in South Africa.

His departure has prompted mutiny within the French squad, with players refusing to train Sunday and issuing a statement saying they were opposed to the decision after details of the bust-up were published in sports daily L'Equipe.

"We regret the incident at half-time of the France v Mexico match, but we regret even more the divulging of an event which was only the squad's business and was part and parcel of the life of a top-level team," the players said.

Spain confident defeat will spark reaction

South Africa, June 20 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Spain are optimistic that a shock 1-0 defeat by Switzerland in their Group H opener will stun the European champions into action for their second match against Honduras on Monday.

"The loss helps to show you that there are no easy matches, that every team at a World Cup will make it hard for you," defender Raul Albiol told a news conference on Saturday.

"The favourites are not winning," he added, in reference to defeats for France and Germany against Mexico and Serbia respectively and England's surprise draw with unfancied Algeria.

"If you look at past World Cups, we have often seen teams that start off losing go on to win the final."

Coach Vicente del Bosque was criticised by his predecessor Luis Aragones, among others, for fielding a cautious 4-5-1 formation against the Swiss.

He may switch to a more ambitious 4-4-2 lineup on Monday, with fit-again Fernando Torres partnering strike partner David Villa up front.

Spain dominated possession against the Swiss but failed to take their chances and suffered only their second defeat in 3-1/2 years following a 2-0 loss to the United States at the Confederations Cup in South Africa last June.

That defeat deprived them of a place in the final against Brazil but if they finish second in Group H they could play the five-times champions in the last 16.

MINIMAL CHANGES

Del Bosque, who is not known for making sweeping tactical changes, told As newspaper on Saturday if there were alterations to the starting 11 against Honduras they would be minimal.

"We have to reestablish ourselves, gain confidence and believe in what has given us so much success in the past," the 59-year-old said.

"We expect (Honduras) to close ranks but, on the other hand, they have to open up at some point and those spaces are what we have to take advantage of," he added.

"This team has had fabulous runs of form and now we are going for six wins. This is the message I have been sending to the players. There is no point in looking back only forwards."

"The positive side of this setback is that it's better to fail at the start than at the end," he added.

He may have been thinking of the 2006 World Cup in Germany when Spain won all three of their group matches, including a 4-0 thrashing of Ukraine in their first game, before losing to eventual runners-up France in the second round.

Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda expects the wounded Spanish to come out fighting but said if his players work together they can cause another upset that would leave Spain's hopes of winning a first World Cup in tatters.

"These games (the Switzerland defeat) happen, just like they lost to the United States a year ago," Rueda said on Friday.

"They're the strongest squad in the world but we don't fear any one player," he added.

"Collectively they are strong but if we work together we can overcome them. If we don't think we can win we may as well not play."

World Cup 2010: Portugal thrash North Korea 7-0

Cape Town, June 21 (bdnews24.com/AFP) – Portugal thrashed North Korea 7-0 in their World Cup Group G match to end the Koreans hopes of reaching the second round.

Goals by Raul Meireles, Simao, Tiago - who got a double - Hugo Almeida, Liedson and Cristiano Ronaldo, his first international goal for nearly two years, gave the Portuguese a huge boost in their quest for reaching the last 16.

Ivory Coast - who have a point from their first two matches - must beat North Korea by a large margin on Friday and hope already qualified five-time champions Brazil inflict a heavy defeat on the Portuguese.

World Cup 2010: Olsen unhappy with Denmark performance

Denmark coach Morten Olsen says his team must rid their game of the errors which blighted their entertaining 2-1 victory over Cameroon in Pretoria.

Samuel Eto'o gave Cameroon the lead after a bad Christian Poulsen error but Nicklas Bendtner and Dennis Rommedahl goals gave Denmark a vital victory.

"We made too many elementary mistakes and I can't allow that," said Olsen.

"We must correct that. I wasn't happy but they fought heroically. Some didn't play well but they fought."

Olsen said a lack of match fitness from some his key players was to blame for a performance marred by losses in concentration and elementary errors,. bbc online.

"We had Nicklas Bendtner, Jon Dahl Tomasson and Daniel Jensen on the pitch, and those players haven't played much," he said.

"But that's the way it is, that's why we had to fight so much. We had nothing more to offer.

"We have too many players who are injured or have been injured so in that respect it was a heroic physical effort, but if we want to progress in this tournament we have a lot to work on. We know that very well."

Olsen did take his team's will to win as a positive from one of the most entertaining games of the tournament so far.

"We actually didn't start very well, we had one good chance through Rommedahl and just after that we made an individual mistake and they scored," he said.

"But we showed spirit, we got back in the game, we showed that we wanted to win.

"We showed things that we don't want to do again, that's for sure, that we need to talk to the players about over the next couple of days.

"But we did have a number of chances. Compared to the game with Holland there were more chances.

World Cup 2010: Le Guen vows to stay as Cameroon coach

Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen vowed to stay on despite his side becoming the first to be knocked out of the 2010 World Cup after a 2-1 loss to Denmark.

"I will not resign," said former Lyon boss Le Guen. "I don't have any regrets and that's not how I operate."

Cameroon took an early lead through Samuel Eto'o but were caught twice on the break as Nicklas Bendtner and Dennis Rommedahl scored for Denmark.

Cameroon had suffered a 1-0 defeat by Japan in their opening game.

The early World Cup exit represents a turnaround in fortunes for Le Guen, who came into the tournament as a hugely popular figure having turned around the Indomitable Lions' faltering qualification campaign.
But his tactics were widely criticised after the dismal showing against Japan and, although his changes to the team brought about a marked improvement against the Danes, Cameroon were wasteful in front of goal and too often naive at the back.

Jean Makoun was turned inside out by Rommedahl for the second goal before Achille Emana and Vincent Aboubakar missed clear-cut chances to equalise.

"It's a great disappointment, we had high hopes, but I think this match shows that we were not really effective enough," said the former Rangers boss.

"We were not able to take the big opportunities we had in the first half and it's a serious disappointment for both us and the Cameroonian nation as a whole."

Meanwhile, Eto'o described crashing out of the World Cup as the greatest disappointment of his glittering career.

"All my season was focused to be ready for this World Cup," said Eto'o, who won the Italian league, cup and Champions League with Inter Milan last season. "It's the only thing I could think about."

While Denmark now look forward to a crucial showdown with Japan, 1990 quarter-finalists Cameroon will only have pride to play for in their match against the Netherlands on Thursday.

"It's hard. It's not normal for us to finish last," said Eto'o. "But there will be other days. They played better than us in the match. It's that simple." bbc online.

Germany pay penalty after 36 yrs

Johannesburg, June 20 (bdnews24.com/AFP) -- Germany's missed World Cup penalty against Serbia helped disprove former England striker Gary Lineker's light-hearted analysis that football is a game for 22 players and in the end the Germans always win.

Fans of Germany could hardly believe their eyes after Lukas Podolski put his kick too close to Serbian keeper Vladimir Stojkovic, not least because the last time a German missed from 12 yards many fans would not have been born.

Not since the 1974 World Cup had a Germany player missed a penalty outside of a shootout.

Former Bayern Munich star Uli Hoeness was the culprit who missed against Poland.

He would also concede the penalty from which Johan Neeskens gave Holland the lead in the final before Paul Breitner levelled - from the spot - and Gerd Mueller scored the winner.

"Podolski was courageous to step up but should have left it to Bastian Schweinsteiger," said unimpressed former coach Franz Beckenbauer.

Until Podolski's mishap Hoeness had been on his own as the only German player in World Cup history to miss from the spot - his effort saved by Jan Tomaszewski, the man Brian Clough once dubbed a 'clown' - save for Uli Stielike.

Stielike missed in a shootout against France in the 1982 World Cup semi-final, but his failure has been forgotten as goalkeeper Harald Schumacher saved two to help the Germans into the final where they lost to Italy.

In 1990, Germany won the final when Andreas Brehme notched his kick against Argentina for the only goal of a disappointing final.

German accuracy has even extended to the European Championship, save for one occasion when they lost the Euro 76 final to Czechoslovakia in what was the first shoot-out at a major final.

Those with long memories will perhaps recall how Antonin Panenka chipped a cheeky winner as the Czechs won after a sole missed German kick - by Uli Hoeness.

World Cup 2010: England set to for clear-the-air talks

England manager Fabio Capello will hold a meeting with his players on Sunday to discuss Friday's 0-0 draw with Algeria.

Former captain John Terry insisted the squad would be free to air their views - and dismissed reports of discontent within England's World Cup camp.

Terry revealed: "We've got a meeting tonight to see where we went wrong.

"Everyone needs to get off their chest exactly how they're feeling. If it upsets him [Capello], or it upsets any player, then so be it."

The pressure is on England after disappointing draws against the United States and Algeria in their opening Group C matches.

Capello's men must now beat Slovenia in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday to be sure of a place in the last 16.

Newspaper reports on Sunday suggested unhappiness at Capello's style is rife among his players, and that his future could be in doubt.

Responding to those reports, Terry stressed that the squad were "fully behind" their 64-year-old Italian manager.

The Chelsea defender added: "I have seen a few reports myself. There is no unrest in the camp at all.
"I'm not going to sit here and question the manager. I'm here on behalf of all the players to say we are all fully behind him. Everyone is positive."

Capello's insistence on naming his line-up two hours before kick-off has come under scrutiny, and his man-management skills have also been questioned.

But Terry stated: "Since the manager has come in he's had his ways and his philosophies that he's brought to the side.

"That's worked in the [qualifying] campaign and nothing should change from that. We've got to stay unified.

"I've read things about people playing with fear. At any level there's a certain amount of nerves, but I can honestly say that all that's gone once we cross the white line. We can't use that as an excuse - we just haven't done it.

"We shouldn't be looking at excuses or criticising the manager. We're supporting him and know we've got his support as well, and that's the main thing.

Italy held to shock draw by New Zealand

Nelspruit, June 20 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - World champions Italy suffered an embarrassing 1-1 draw with underdogs New Zealand in their second World Cup Group F match on Sunday, a result which complicates their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.

New Zealand, ranked 78th in the world, took a shock lead on seven minutes after struggling Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro made a hash of trying to clear a free kick into the box and Shane Smeltz poked home.

Italy had talked all week about the difficulties an unchanged New Zealand would pose from dead balls but they did not deal with the danger even if there was a slight suspicion of offside.

Coach Marcello Lippi stationed himself at the edge of his technical area with a worried look and his team increased the tempo with Riccardo Montolivo striking the post from distance before they levelled on 29 minutes.

Daniele De Rossi tumbled in the box under pressure from Tommy Smith as a cross came over and Vincenzo Iaquinta calmly slotted in the debateable spotkick.

On a bright day in northeastern South Africa, where the giraffe-shaped stadium roof supports in Nelspruit glistened in the sun, Italy pushed for a second with Montolivo's fierce shot one of a number of efforts but they never looked convincing.

The holders employed a 4-4-2 formation from the start rather than the 4-2-3-1 from Monday's 1-1 draw with Paraguay and then threw on three attacking substitutes as darkness fell but New Zealand dealt with the threat reasonably comfortably.

Italy, who wore black armbands following the death of 1968 European Championship winner Roberto Rosato, meet Slovakia in their final group game on Thursday at Johannesburg's Ellis Park needing a handsome win to definitely progress. Paraguay, New Zealand's next opponents on Thursday, beat Slovakia 2-0 earlier to top the group with four points while Italy and New Zealand have two.

World Cup Result: Slovakia 0-2 Paraguay

Paraguay took a big step towards a place in the last 16 with a stylish victory over a sluggish Slovakia that lifted them to the top of Group F.

A fine goal by Enrique Vera, curled in with the outside of his boot, gave the South Americans the lead and Carlos Riveros made the game safe with a brilliant late strike.

With a final group match against unfancied New Zealand to come, they must now be confident of reaching the knockout stages.

For Slovakia, their inability to raise their game has left them facing an early exit - particularly as they end their group fixtures against reigning champions Italy.

Two draws in the opening matches had left the group finely poised and Paraguay took the chance to assume control by deservedly clinching their first win.

It was achieved by a textbook execution of a high-pressing game and by maximising the attacking options from their 4-3-3 formation.

The interchanges between the frontline of Vera, Barrios and Roque Santa Cruz - particularly in the first half - caused Slovakia all manner of problems.

And once again in this World Cup, it was a case of the latin brand of short, sharp passing and excellent movement dominating the more rigid European style.

For the first half an hour, Paraguay attacked at will - a deflected Santa Cruz shot brought a fine save from Jan Mucha, Paulo da Silva was inches away from a teasing cross and Cristian Riveros fired in a low shot from outside the box.

Exquisite interplay between Vera and Barrios saw the latter shoot just over before Valdez also fizzed an effort too high.

The breakthrough came on 27 minutes when a sublime Barrios pass split the defence and Vera curled the ball into the corner of the goal with the outside of the boot.

Only then did Slovakia stir and finally created a chance when a corner found Kornel Salata unmarked but he headed over the bar.

Paraguay immediately hit back and almost doubled their advantage after sloppy Slovakian defending let in Santa Cruz, whose low shot was kept out by the foot of keeper Mucha.

After the break, the Paraguayans appeared to play within themselves - sometimes a dangerous policy with such a slender lead to defend.

But Slovakia's lack of invention, flair and creativity was apparent as still they failed to exert any sustained pressure, a Stanislav Sestak cross that evaded Robert Vittek summing up the ineffectiveness of their play.

By contrast, when Paraguay broke from their policy of containment, they came within inches of extending their lead as Santa Cruz delivered an accurate centre and Vera sent his downward header narrowly past the upright.

Much had been expected of Slovakia playmaker Marek Hamsik but the Napoli man was desperately disappointing throughout and he was unable to inspire his team-mates.

Hamsik and his side were unable to find any cohesion and they were finally put out of their misery when Riveros smashed in a fierce drive from the edge of the box.

And while Paraguay have virtually secured their passage out of the group - they need only a point from their final match against New Zealand - Slovakia's failure to get out of first gear has put them on the brink of elimination.bbc online.

Netherlands 1-0 Japan

The Netherlands put themselves on the brink of qualification for the last 16 with a hard-fought victory in Durban over an impressively stubborn Japan side.

Wesley Sneijder's powerful 52nd-minute winner from just outside the box settled a fascinating Group E contest between two contrasting sides who opened up in the second half and were creating good chances right up to the final whistle.

The Dutch will qualify for the knockout stages before their final group game if Cameroon fail to beat Denmark later on Saturday, and are still likely to go through regardless.

Japan came into the match off the back of their first World Cup win on foreign soil after beating Cameroon 1-0 on Monday.

And the afterglow of that historic achievement was evident in the admirable tactical nous they executed in the first half as they stifled the Netherlands' search for fluid creativity with regimental efficiency in front of a near-full Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Dutch, who are now unbeaten in 21 matches, started like a team full of quiet confidence as they kept possession well and used the width of Dirk Kuyt on the right and Rafael van der Vaart on the left.

Inter Milan midfielder Sneijder had the first clear chance but, on this occasion, could not keep his long-range shot, from a free-kick, down - a common sight in South Africa as players struggle to tame the much-criticised Jabulani ball.

When they did break up the Netherlands' passing, Grenoble midfielder Daisuke Matsui looked bright for Japan - instigating an incisive move that eventually resulted in Yuto Nagatomo hitting a stinging shot just wide.

The Asian side slowly began to frustrate the Dutch, who struggled to bring striker Robin van Persie into the game and lacked a killer pass.

And by the end of the first half Japan had relative control, with towering Brazilian-born defender Tulio heading just wide before Matsui lashed a decent volley straight at goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

But the Netherlands - who have never won the World Cup, despite a rich pedigree of world-class footballers - took the second half by the scruff of the neck, with Van Persie breaking free on a couple of occasions.

After a period of concerted pressure as the ball ricocheted around the box in the 52nd minute, the Arsenal striker managed to nudge it into the path of Sneijder.

Loitering just outside the penalty area, the Inter Milan star lashed a powerful right-foot shot towards goal that keeper Eiji Kawashima could only deflect into the net when he was well placed to make an effective save.

That moment liberated both teams and no longer could containment tactics be the limit of Japan's ambitions.

They responded in kind, Van Persie finding himself hooking a dangerous cross from substitute Shunsuke Nakamura over his own crossbar from within the six-yard box.

Hamburg's Eljero Elia came on as a substitute for Van der Vaart and nearly recreated the impression he had from the bench in the Netherlands' first match, cleverly releasing Ibrahim Allelay for a one on one, although his fellow substitute could not add a second with seven minutes remaining as Kawashima smothered his attempt.

Japan had the best chance to level the score one minute from time but unmarked substitute Shinji Okazaki fired over from 10 yards.

Seconds later, referee Hector Baldassi waved away penalty claims as Yuto Nagatomo went down under a challenge from Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong and the Dutch clung on to achieve maximum points from their opening two fixtures. bbc online.

MAGALIESBURG, South Africa, June 18 (Reuters) - From stacking shelves at a supermarket in Brazil to playing for Portugal at the World Cup in South Africa, lean striker Liedson’s decade-long unique journey has been based on racking up goals everywhere he goes.

Just over ten years ago Liedson was playing football to relax from his routine job in a supermarket when he was discovered by a businessman who invited him to join his office team in Brazil’s Bahia state.

Proving himself no lightweight when cashing in goals, the striker’s rise was swift, going from small clubs to Flamengo, Corinthians and then a move to Portugal’s Sporting in 2003.

Known as the “Light One” at Sporting for his lean and wiry Liedson is a natural poacher who ties tireless chasing, the ability to lose markers and a deft technical touch to “resolve” games by scoring goals, as the club’s fans say constantly.

Those attritubes have helped him scored 160 goals in seven seasons at the Portuguese club.

“I have to run, as I am skinny and that gives me a disadvantage in terms of physical contact, so I have to escape my marker and search for space,” he told reporters on Friday.

When Portugal were struggling to find the net in the early World Cup qualifiers last year, coach Queiroz opted to call Liedson, who had just obtained Portuguese citizenship, to resolve the problem.

The 32 year-old weighed in with a goal on his debut against Denmark, salvaging a 1-1 draw that proved to be vital, and then added another two to help the side produce a late surge.

He has gone quiet since, but could be seen chasing the Ivory Coast defenders in Portugal’s cautious 0-0 draw on Tuesday and carving himself out a chance from nowhere.

“Goals will come naturally,” Liedson said, adding that he hopes that will happen in Portugal’s next match, against North Korean on Monday.
OHANNESBURG (AP)—Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar is already thinking of how to stop Didier Drogba and Cristiano Ronaldo in the team’s next two World Cup matches.

Julio Cesar had very little work when Brazil beat North Korea 2-1 in the opener, but he knows things will be different when Brazil faces Ivory Coast and Portugal in its next Group G matches.

“They are two players with completely different styles,” Julio Cesar said Friday. “Without a doubt, I will have to pay special attention to both of them.”
Brazil will play Ivory Coast on Sunday in Johannesburg and Portugal five days later in Durban.

Julio Cesar said Ronaldo is the most skillful of the two attacking players and has a more complete game than Drogba.

“He is technically superior, has more skills,” the Inter Milan goalkeeper said. “He shoots well and heads well, too.”

He said Drogba is especially dangerous when in position to score, rarely failing to find the net.

“He stays more inside the area and knows how to finish,” Julio Cesar said.

It was unclear whether Drogba is going to start against Brazil on Sunday, but he came on as a 66th-minute substitute against Portugal after breaking his right arm in a warmup and is likely to play at least some of the game.

Julio Cesar feels Brazil has an edge against Drogba, who was not a factor when Chelsea lost to Inter Milan in the round of 16 of the Champions League last season.

The Inter defense that stopped Drogba included Julio Cesar, right back Maicon and center back Lucio—all starters for Brazil in South Africa.

“Lucio completely dominated Drogba in the first match,” said Julio Cesar, who added that Drogba and Ronaldo can be especially dangerous at free kicks. “Each of them strike the ball in a very particular way, we have to be careful.”

Julio Cesar downplayed the current goalkeeping mistakes at the World cup, saying “they are normal.”

He said he is not as concerned about making a mistake as he is with the cold temperatures so far in South Africa. It reached 1 degree Celsius (34 Fahrenheit) in Brazil’s match against North Korea at Ellis Park.

Chile confident Jorge Valdivia will be fit

ELSPRUIT, South Africa (AP)—Chile player Rodrigo Millar is confident teammate Jorge Valdivia will be fit to face Switzerland on Monday in the World Cup.

Valdivia came off in the 87th minute of the Honduras match Wednesday with a dead right leg, but squad spokesman Claudio Olmedo denied reports that Valdivia had torn a muscle.

Millar says Valdivia “trained apart from the other players” but they didn’t see anything suggesting “he’ll be out of the next game.”
Chile and Switzerland lead Group H with three points each, while Spain and Honduras have zero.

Valdivia warmed up and jogged gently around the pitch apart from the other players during the training session at the squad’s Ingwenyama training base, near Nelspruit, on Friday.

The rest of the players ran at a higher pace, including doing sprints, before exercises to work on the players’ ball skills.

The squad looked relaxed and broke into laughter at several points when players let the ball touch the ground during juggling drills.

Humberto Suazo, top scorer during the South American qualifiers, was fully involved in the session.

Suazo has been bothered by a left thigh injury sustained during a pre-World Cup friendly against Israel, and was left out of the opening win against Honduras because of a lack of match fitness.

Chile has been praised for its attacking flair, and Millar said the team would stick to that style despite the pressure increasing before the Switzerland game.

“This team is not going to change the way it plays very much,” he said. “We know we’ve got to close down space because Switzerland beat Spain despite having very little of the ball.

“It’s also clear that we’ve got to have more mobility than the Spanish team in order to create space and open up a very tight defense.”

Chile defender Gary Medel said Switzerland’s surprise win against Spain gave Chile the chance to top the group.

That could be important if Brazil, as expected, top Group G. The winner of Brazil’s group plays the runner-up in Chile’s group—so finishing in first place would probably avoid a tough meeting with Dunga’s team in the last 16.

France team called ‘catastrophe’ after Mexico loss

PARIS (AP)—“Catastrophe!” says one French commentator.

“Pathetic!” says the front-page headline on France’s most read tabloid.

It was all glum faces and angry media in France on Friday after the team’s 2-0 loss to Mexico, a defeat that makes Les Bleus a longshot to advance at the World Cup.

It’s a far cry from the victory party on Paris’ Champs-Elysees when the team led by Zinedine Zidane won the 1998 Cup in the nearby Stade de France. Or even 2006, when France made it to the final before losing to Italy when Zidane was infamously ejected for delivering a head-butt late in the match.

Outgoing coach Raymond Domenech is getting the bulk of the criticism after Thursday’s game.

The daily L’Equipe calls the team “The Impostors.” Morning talk shows were dominated by former athletes, politicians from left and right and many others— all trashing Les Bleus performance.

France’s most influential sports daily views the game as “one of the worst slaps … ever inflicted to the French team under the Domenech era.”

The loss, coming after a dull 0-0 draw against Uruguay, means France will need a lot of help to get out of the first round.

L’Equipe’s front page says this “minute hope” doesn’t even matter.

“Let’s have no sadness or desolation, and even less anger,” it said. “That would be giving too much to a team that has nothing to offer.”

The national team captain seemed to agree.

“We’re not a big team,” defender Patrice Evra told L’Equipe.

Many French viewers agreed with the media’s dismissal of the national team.

An advertisement in the Le Parisien tabloid tried to laugh off the matter with a jibe at Domenech’s expense.

“Do like Raymond: prepare your holidays!” says an ad for TV sets.

France defender Bixente Lizarazu said Evra’s insistence that “everything’s fine, we’re confident, all is well within the squad” merely served to “hide that things were not going well.”

In three major tournaments under Domenech, France has won only four of 12 matches. Including Euro 2008, France has won none of its last five games, scoring just one goal and allowing eight.

“The France team plays in the image of its coach. He’s not good, we’re not good,” former France winger Robert Pires said on French television.

Serbia beats 10-man Germany 1-0 at World Cup

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (AP)—Germany went from indestructible to self destructive.

Milan Jovanovic made the most of it, scoring one minute after German striker Miroslav Klose got ejected Friday to give Serbia a 1-0 World Cup upset over the three-time champions.
Days after routing Australia 4-0 in the tournament’s most impressive debut, Germany lost its momentum when Klose—the leading scorer at the 2006 World Cup — picked up his second yellow card.

Jovanovic scored a minute later, controlling a header and firing in a side-foot shot from directly in front of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

To make matters worse for Germany, Serbia goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic stopped Lukas Podolski’s penalty kick in the 60th minute. It was Germany’s first missed penalty in regular World Cup play since 1974.

Often considered the weak link on Serbia’s team, Stojkovic read Podolski’s penalty by diving to his left. The goalkeeper grabbed the ball when the game was over and stuck it under his jersey.

Serbia was part of former Yugoslavia, which played Germany six times in a World Cup and only won in 1962—38 years ago.

“The second half was not 45 minutes, it was like two years for us,” Jovanovic said. “We beat Germany after (38) years, and it’s something real big for us.”

With both teams using lone strikers, the match turned into a physical, often bruising contest in midfield, with Serbia allowing Germany little space for the kind of flowing, quick-passing moves it used in beating Australia.

Spanish referee Alberto Undiano handed out a tournament-high nine yellow cards. For Germany, Klose’s second yellow was the costliest.

Moments later Milos Krasic, a problem for the Germans all day, chased a long ball to the sideline and swung a high cross to the far post, where Nikola Zigic headed it down for Jovanovic to volley in.

Jovanovic sprinted off the field and over a barrier to embrace the ecstatic Serbian fans.

The Germans’ best effort came in a hectic end to the first half, when Sami Khedira struck the crossbar and Thomas Mueller’s bicycle kick was cleared off the line by Serbian defender Aleksandar Kolarov.

“It was a difficult game, a very important game for us,” Stojkovic said. “This is a great victory for all of us. We have showed we are a good team and we believe in ourselves.”

Both teams now have three points after two games in Group D. Ghana also has three points, and plays its second match—against Australia—on Saturday.

World-Maradona’s men put sex-before-soccer myths to bed

JOHANNESBURG, June 18 (Reuters) - For Diego Maradona’s Argentine squad, sex is fine as long as it is not 2 a.m. and accompanied by a bottle of bubbly.

It is one of football’s hottest debates; is sex a distraction or can a little bit of what players fancy help ease the strain and tension of World Cup competition?

The polemic resurfaced at the World Cup this week after British newspapers said the pitch-side presence of the Spanish goalkeeper’s glamorous girlfriend was being blamed for Spain’s shock 1-0 defeat by Switzerland. [ID:nLDE65H0XE]

All things in moderation is the motto in the Argentine camp, and their virtually guaranteed spot in the second round suggests the liberal line is paying off so far.

“Sex isn’t a problem. It’s only a problem if they’re doing it at two in the morning with a bottle of champagne on the go,” team doctor Donato Villani said before coach Maradona and Co. set off for South Africa.

During Argentina’s victorious 1986 World Cup campaign, coach Carlos Bilardo, a former gynecologist, said sex was fine as long as “the woman does the hard work”.

Hosts South Africa have taken a similarly laid-back position, with the team coach giving a green light to conjugal visits from footballers’ wives and girlfriends.

“We’re not in prison or a military camp,” Carlos Alberto Parreira said before The Boys’ opening Group A clash.

At the base of flamboyant favourites and five-times champions Brazil, Dunga says the spirit is live and let live.

“When they’re on their own, they can do what they like. Not everyone likes sex, or wine, but everyone has to do whatever they like,” he told a recent news conference.

Reinaldo Rueda, coach of Central American underdogs Honduras, has lamented that air tickets are too pricey for some of his players’ partners to join them, while a Swiss team spokesman said many wives were simply too busy to come along.

FREE AND EASY

Not all coaches are taking a free-and-easy attitude on the subject.

True to his stern image though hardly his Italian heritage, England coach Fabio Capello is limiting contact between his players and their famous wives and girlfriends, dubbed the WAGS by British media.

Capello will only let England’s players see their families one day a week, after matches. “We’re going to South Africa to play, not for a holiday,” he has said.

Some pundits blamed the WAGS’ headline-grabbing antics at the last World Cup for the team’s lacklustre performance and the country’s Football Association will not be footing the bill for them to go to the tournament, as it did in 2006.

The Spanish players are under similar instructions, but that was not enough to avert the controversy over keeper Iker Casillas’ girlfriend Sara Carbonero, a reporter who is covering the tournament for Spain’s Telecinco channel.

Britain’s The Times said a “Spanish inquisition” had erupted after Wednesday’s upset, but commentators in Spain said it was absurd to blame the eye-catching presenter.

“Pinning the blame for Spain’s defeat on Sara Carbonero is as infantile as claiming that Robert Green’s inability to save the ball against the United States was because he was distracted after his girlfriend dumped him,” columnist Marivi Fernandez Palacios wrote on the website of El Mundo newspaper.

“I hope they don’t feel under pressure because of these cheap shots and can do their work successfully.”

Slovenia 2-0 USA: Valter Birsa & Milivoje Novakovic Have Europeans Cruising At Half-Time

Slovenia led the USA 2-0 at the break, having dominated much of the first period, leaving themselves on the verge of the knockout phase.

The expectation in the early stages of the game was that the Europeans would sit back and simply soak up pressure, but that wasn’t the case. Matjaz Kek’s outfit looked the livelier side are a stodgy, disjointed start to the match.

Zlatan Ljubijankic headed a free kick over the American goal before a cross from Birsa nearly picked out Milivoje Novakovic. Slowly the pressure was building, yet there seemed to be little danger when Birsa gathered possession 25 yards from goal and smacked a swerving drive past the impassive Tim Howard.

Though Jose Altidore, Robbie Findlay and Landon Donovan injected moments of pace into the USA’s offence, these were all too fleeting. Samir Handanovic in the Slovenian goal would enjoy a relatively easy start. The goalkeeper had to crane his neck to see a Michael Bradley drive fly over and he spectacularly punched away a dangerous free kick but was otherwise unemployed.

Slovenia weren’t looking especially likely to add to their tally, though a Birsa free kick did force Howard to crumple to his right in order to make a routine save. At the same time, they were entirely comfortable, with the midfield dominant and able to keep possession under surprisingly little pressure. Neither enterprising nor defensive, the Europeans seemed to have the game in their grasp.

Ten minutes before the interval, Altidore would charge down the right on one of his positive runs. The Villarreal forward would a foul from Bostjan Cesar. From the resultant free kick, Francisco Torres, who until that point had been unimpressive, drove a dangerous shot at goal that was pushed away by Handanovic.

In the ensuing minutes, the North Americans twice went close. Jay DeMerit had a head loop wide, while Bojan Jokic and Miso Brecko twice made crucial interceptions when it seemed that the USA, who were suddenly finding room and rhythm, must score.

On the counterattack, Slovenia doubled their advantage three minutes before the break. Ljubijankic cut the American defence in two with a through ball to Novakovic, who finished neatly.yahoo news online.

World Cup Player Ratings: Germany 0-1 Serbia

Goal.com

GERMANY

Neuer - 6.5: On his day, he might have been able to block Jovanovic's winner, but to be fair, the Schalke man had little chance to make the save. He ultimately had very little to deal with, but positioned himself well and took care of the threats that came his way.

Lahm - 6: Unable to get forward and provide the width that Germany so sorely needed. Accordingly, Mueller had to send the ball inward from the right flank, a skill that the youngster has yet to develop. Lahm played well defensively and passed well from deep, but will need to do more in attack if Germany are to advance deeper in the tournament.

Mertesacker - 5.5: Was not quite able to prevent the goal, but otherwise played a rather solid game. The German defense opened up late, but that was after it was reduced to three men and Loew had resorted to rather desperate measures.

Friedrich - 4.5: Did what most defenders would do in the play leading up to the goal, but still should take fault for not rushing to mark Jovanovic after Krasic' cross was delivered. Also played a very loose pass late in the game that almost resulted in a second goal for the Serbs.

Badstuber - 4: Manhandled by Krasic. He's a good central defender, but lacks the pace and agility to keep up with wingers, and it showed today. Nearly every Serbian attack came from his side, and the Bayern Munich man was unable to cope with the pressure.

Schweinsteiger - 6.5: Distributed the ball well, but looked sedated at times. He normally plays robustly, but with the referee giving bookings like candy, Schweinsteiger often took the split second to think before committing himself. The 25-year old went forward more today than against Australia, and provided some good balls forward, but they weren't enough.

Khedira - 6.5: Struck the underside of the crossbar late in the first half and completed an impressive 51 of his 55 passes despite being faced with a packed Serbian midfield. As usual, the Stuttgart man ran more than any of his teammates, went forward, and never compromised his position.

Mueller - 5: Put his powerful frame to good use and exhibited typically good movement, but his crossing was abysmal. His inability to deliver the ball from wide highlights Mueller's need to have Lahm supporting him, and exemplifies how the 20-year old really is more of a central player than a winger.

Oezil - 5.5: For once in his life, the tricky attacker was marked out of the match. He came to life for a few moments in the second half and delivered a gorgeous through ball to Podolski, who failed to convert. With all thins considered, though, it wasn't his day.

Podolski - 4: Did well in the build-up to Germany's attacks, but showed his club form when it mattered most. He simply could not finish, and that was highlighted with his one-on-one and penalty misses, both of which were very poorly struck. He also was very selfish, opting to shoot late in the game rather than play a return pass to Marin, who would have been wide open. The Jeckyll/Hyde parallel continues.

Klose - NA: Committed three fouls and received two very controversial bookings. Perhaps he should have been less aggressive after his initial carding, but pressuring defenders is his style of play, so one has to feel compassion for him. If today was his last World Cup match, it is a cruel, cruel way for him to exit the international stage.

Substitutes

Cacau - 7: Had many touches on the ball, but had to compromise his position as a striker. Drifted all over the park, but rarely ventured into the penalty area.

Marin - 6: Came on to play as a spark plug in Ozil's stead, and although he hit the target once, he never really pressured Stojkovic. He usually plays more directly, but Marin was well marked, and unable to run at his opponents.

SERBIA

Stojkovic – 6.5: Will be remembered for his excellent penalty save, but the Sporting goalkeeper also nearly gifted Khedira a goal in the first half. Like Neuer, he ultimately did not have very many stops to make, but did well to snuff out any danger that came his way.

Ivanovic – 7: Linked very well with Krasic, but occasionally struggled to contain Podolski. Was not punished, however. The Chelsea man was booked early, but did well not to earn a sending off despite the referee's card-happy tendencies.

Subotic – 8: His team's best defender, and candidate for man of the match. The Dortmund centre half provided support for Ivanovic and Vidic, and absolutely would not yield space for the German attackers to exploit. A rock in the center of defense.

Vidic – 6.5: Made a few decisive challenges and never set a foot wrong in his tackling and marking, but conceded an absolutely needless penalty in the second half. Also distributed well from the back. It's really a shame that his hand ball marred an otherwise sparkling performance.

Kolarov – 7.5: Like Ivanovic, the Lazio man was very, very impressive at the back, and despite earning an early booking, managed to cleanly play the rest of the game. His pressure at the attacking end forced Lahm to play in a more withdrawn role, and effectively eliminated Germany's ability to attack wide.

Krasic – 8: Man of the match. The CSKA Moscow winger was too tricky for Badstuber to contain, and was at the heart of nearly every attacking run his team made. His moves were the only ones Serbia could use to get behind the German defense, and surely enough it was his play that catalyzed the winner.

Ninkovic – 6: Played second fiddle to Stankovic, but did well to pressure the German central midfielders and play his part in plugging the centre. Eventually replaced by the more defensive-minded Kacar.

Kuzmanovic – 7: Marked Ozil exceptionally well, and served as the central pivot for the Serbian attack. His ability to spread the ball wide over long distances spread the German defense, and perhaps should have catalyzed more goals for Serbia.

Stankovic – 7.5: The more forward fulcrum of the Serbian midfield, Stankovic distributed well, finding Krasic, Zigic, and Jovanovic with some lovely passes. Failed to win the possession battle despite having a numerical advantage, however.

Jovanovic – 7: Scored the only goal of the game, which in itself is worth a high rating. Otherwise, the newly-signed Liverpool man was rather disappointing. Of all the Serbian players, only the substitute Kacar completed fewer passes than him. Nonetheless, Jovanovic was in the right place at the right time.

Zigic – 7.5: The towering striker used his height to pose a real problem for the German defenders. The Birmingham man assisted Jovanovic' winner, rattled the crossbar with an effort of his own, and used his physicality to win long balls and tee up his teammates.

Substitutes

Kacar – 6.5: Covered a very large distance in his limited playing time, and filled in everywhere on the defensive end. His fresh legs helped prevent Lahm's runs late in the game.

Petrovic – 6.5: Came on for Kuzmanovic for the final quarter hour, and like Kacar, filled in wherever needed. Provided support for Ivanovic when Marin looked like attacking, and also prevented the Germans from making any attacks through the middle.

World Cup 2010: Maradona revelling in 'easy' job

Diego Maradona announced he has an "easy job" coaching Argentina after watching his side beat South Korea 4-1 to close in on a place in the last 16.

Gonzalo Higuain scored a hat-trick to add to Park Chu-Young's own goal as Argentina took control of Group B.

"I feel good vibrations now we have almost qualified for the last 16 - the way we played was tremendous," he said. "It gives me peace of mind.

"When you have amazing players like I have, then my job is an easy one."

Argentina sparkled in attack, with Lionel Messi, Angel di Maria, and Higuain all excelling.
Higuain became the tournament's top scorer as he netted the first World Cup hat-trick since Pauleta's for Portugal in 2002.

"I'm very happy to score the goals, but we have to think of the team as a whole," said the striker, who scored 27 goals for Real Madrid last season.

Maradona celebrated the victory, which followed a 1-0 win over Nigeria in their opener, by hugging and kissing his players, but he insisted afterwards: "I still prefer women.

"I am dating Veronica, who is blonde and 31 years old. But I like to acknowledge and congratulate my players when they play as well as they did today. That was a pleasing result and display. It was a job well done."

The only black mark for Argentina came when Martin Demichelis was caught in possession, allowing Lee Chung-Yong to pull one back just before half-time.

But Maradona could afford to be philosophical after his side's strong second-half performance.

"Everyone makes mistakes. At the end if the day it did not cost us anything and it is forgotten," he said.

"It emboldened the team because in the second half they came out with a strong attitude - they did it for a team-mate who had made a mistake.
